FAQ:
Q: What is
this type of stretching and why is it different?
A: Active
Isolated Stretching (AIS) has gained wide popularity
because it is so effective. Since it offers an active
component - that is, the person is always initiating the
movement with active muscle contractions -
strengthening, toning, oxygen and circulation are all
taking place during the exercises. Passive and
static stretching often involve long holds that are
uncomfortable and can be detrimental to improving
flexibility. AIS offers an easy to learn modality that
is safe and comfortable.
Q: I'm over
55. Can I still learn from this DVD?
A:
Absolutely. This DVD was designed for everyone,
with a special focus on the older population. Just
ask Gertrude Lowe. She is in her eighties and is
featured in the opening to the DVD.
Q: Do I need
anything to perform these stretches?
A: Yes.
The only thing you need is a soft rope at least 8' in
length and the desire to improve your movements.
While a stability ball is used in the DVD, a stool,
chair, or a standing posture may be used to perform the
upper body stretches.
Q: How long
does it take to see results?
A: You should
feel improved movements after one day, but the secret to
overcoming chronic conditions is daily maintenance.
Remember, you did not develop tightness or conditions
such as sciatica overnight; it took years to accumulate.
With a little effort, you can begin to reverse this!
Q: Will I be
sore?
A: You can
expect some soreness, especially if you were not that
active to begin with. Since this method is active,
and you are performing repetitions, your muscles will
get a little sore initially.
Q: I
currently do Yoga. Is there any benefit to
performing these exercises?
A: This DVD
is a great adjunct to Yoga, Pilates, or any other
activity. Because the movements are so specific and
precise, you can prepare soft tissue for intensive
movements. Yoga sessions are more powerful and the
postures are more easily tolerated when certain areas
are prepared- especially for the Yoga newbie.
